AA Enters Central Heating and Boiler Insurance Market

The AA Home Emergency Response & Boiler CoverThe AA has a long and distinguished history as a provider of important motor-related products and services, such as roadside assistance and vehicle insurance. Although UK motorists recognise the AA as a popular and trustworthy brand in the automobile business, the company aims to broaden its horizons – and widen its customer base – by becoming, quite literally, a household name.

Fronted by the long-serving comedian, John Cleese, a multimillion-pound marketing campaign has been implemented by the AA to ensure the British public is made aware of the firm’s move into the central heating and boiler insurance market. John Cleese, whose fictional 1970s television character, Basil Fawlty, was notoriously inept at looking after his hotel, has begun to appear on television screens throughout the UK as he attempts to manage a faulty shower.

Unlike the standard British Gas HomeCare policy, the AA’s Home Emergency Response policy will cover a range of problems that can affect domestic properties, including blocked drains, damaged roof tiles and smashed windows. In many ways, the Home Emergency Response policy is similar to those provided by rival insurer, HomeServe, but with additional indemnity options included.

Head of AA Home Rescue, Tom Stringer, commented: “For too long the home emergency market has been dominated by a small number of players and it’s now time to give consumers greater choice”. Mr Stringer continued: “For more than 100 years we’ve been rescuing people on the roads, so it’s a natural progression for the AA to transfer these skills to the home. We are confident that many of our 15 million members will see the value in extending rescue cover to their homes”.

Although AA home cover should be widely welcomed on the basis that it ought to further stimulate competition in a market dominated by a handful of major players, its policies are subject to a few important exclusions. Most notably, the Home Emergency Response policy only covers gas and LPG boilers, so householders with oil burners would have to look elsewhere. Boiler cover is provided by the AA on boilers up to – but not exceeding – 15 years old, whilst the motoring giant excludes liability where boilers have not been “properly maintained”.
