Boiler Breakdown Cover

The Boiler Breakdown Cover Market

The vagaries of the British weather often serve as a harsh reminder of how important a central heating and hot water boiler is. Domestic consumers in the United Kingdom typically spend between £65 million and £70 million on emergency boiler repairs and this has led to a burgeoning market for boiler breakdown cover.

Boiler breakdown cover is now available from boiler manufacturers themselves, energy providers and insurance companies – although as a service contract rather than insurance product – so there is plenty of competition and many cost-effective products. Boiler breakdown cover should, however, include guaranteed repairs by a CORGI registered engineer and free – or at least discounted – parts and labour included in the cost of the cover. The ability to call out an engineer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no limit on the maximum number of call outs is also highly desirable.

Typically these features are available for a fixed rate monthly fee but there is a deal of diversity amongst boiler breakdown cover products, so it is important to check the small print. Some products carry an excess of £50 or more per call out. Some include an annual boiler inspection and service but it is important to understand what is and what is not covered.

You may, of course, find that your boiler and central heating system is or can be covered by your existing household insurance policy. Boiler breakdown cover of this type is not typically as comprehensive as that provided by a specific product but may, nevertheless, be cost-effective if you have a fairly new and reliable boiler.
