Boiler Insurance – Comparing Providers
A domestic central heating boiler breaks down somewhere in the United Kingdom every 15 seconds. Calling out an engineer to repair a boiler typically costs at least £30 per hour – and often considerably more – in labour costs alone so it is easy to see why boiler insurance is an important consideration for many consumers.
Boiler insurance is available from but not limited to gas and electricity supply companies. Many consumers do purchase boiler insurance from their existing utilities supplier but policies are also available from insurance companies otherwise associated with motor, buildings and contents, etc. cover. It therefore pays to shop around for boiler insurance and you may find that there are some significant differences between the policies available.
Boiler insurance obviously covers the cost of repairs to your boiler and controls but may also include your central heating system as a whole as well as an annual inspection of your boiler. An annual boiler inspection – typically costing around £70 – should be performed in any case so boiler insurance policies that include this “as standard” can prove to be very cost effective.
By the same token some boiler insurance companies impose limitations on the type and particularly the age of boilers that can be insured. Most companies have reservations about insuring boilers that are over 15 years old – 8 years old in the case of a “combi” or combination boiler – and you should equally take note of any terms and conditions as to what does and does not constitute “economical” repair.
