Is boiler breakdown cover worth it?
Although a regular, annual service from a CORGI qualified engineer will make it much less likely for your boiler to break down or develop and major faults, it is absolutely essential you do not assume that your boiler will never break down. An item used so regularly in the home, such as a boiler, is at a high risk or becoming damaged, with most cases of a breakdown being of a well-cared for boiler inexplicably packing-up at no fault of its owner. Fixing a broken boiler without the proper cover can be incredibly expensive, not to mention leave you without heat or hot water while you desperately seek an appointment with over-worked independent boiler engineers. A breakdown can be dangerous for families containing the elderly or young children in the winter, and a boiler will statistically choose to breakdown as the weather gets colder – this is due to many people not using their boiler throughout the summer, causing it to become clogged or seized, and once they switch it on again as the weather turns foul, the boiler will not respond. Of course, this creates even more demand on independent contractors at that time of year, making it incredibly difficult to find an appointment, let alone one that will suit you. Many breakdown cover services have their own private CORGI qualified engineers, with less demand on their time and more exclusivity towards your own needs.
Types of boiler breakdown cover
Do not be afraid to take our insurance cover separate to the provider that provides your gas, oil or electricity. You do not have the obligation to use their insurance services, and very often by not choosing to take out boiler breakdown cover with them you can save yourself some money. Of course, some of the bigger names have been known to offer more competitive deals, and can do because of their size and turnover.
When choosing your breakdown cover, be aware there is generally only two or three main types of insurance available on the market that cover boiler breakdowns, these either:
Cover your boiler, its parts and controls
or
Your whole central heating system, including the boiler
or even
Full plans covering your boiler breakdowns, central heating system, drains, plumbing, wiring and an annual inspection and service by a qualified engineer.
Some “Home Emergency” covers will also take care of heating and hot water – but only when it counts as an emergency, which means if you have a boiler breakdown in the summer months, you may not be covered.
Of course, many insurance companies will allow you to customise your insurance cover to suit yourself and your budget. By trimming away unwanted aspects of a policy, it is possible this way yo get a cheaper insurance plan. Be aware, though, while being fussy with your plan and getting a great deal is a good idea, make sure you are covered for everything you feel you need, and double check exactly what you want before committing.
